There are many ways to get rid of weeds on the site. These measures will help to make life easier for gardeners and protect plantings from aggressive “neighbors”.
Dumpless soil treatment method
Weed control should begin as early as the preparation stage of the seedbeds for planting. Proponents of organic farming are now actively using the dump-free method of soil treatment. In this method, the soil is dug only once – at the time of primary treatment. The rest of the time, the soil is only loosened.
Excavating instead of digging – the basis of zero-tillage soil treatment method, just like weed barrier.
What good is this way? It prevents weed seeds from being brought to the surface and therefore from germinating. At the same time, seeds brought to the site by the wind can not cause serious harm to cultivated plants.
To prevent soil from settling on seedbeds, you can install low fences around them made of planks, bricks or tiles. The paths can be covered with mulch (gravel, bark, chips) – then weeds cannot grow even here.
The same principle can be used to protect plants that grow in rokaria or on alpine slides. You need to weed the flower bed, cover the soil with film or cardboard, and top with a layer of soil in which the plants will be planted. Then the space between cultures should be filled with gravel, expanded clay, chips or bark.
One of the safest ways to get rid of weeds is by mulching. The mulch layer deprives the weed seeds of the light they need to germinate.
A variety of materials can be used as mulch: humus, compost, peat, pine bark, straw, hay, cut grass, fallen leaves, shells of nuts and eggs, paper. However, they have to be selected wisely. For example, if you use peat or pine bark as mulch, they can increase the acidity of the soil. And not every plant can grow in such a soil.
Mulch from the bark…
Mulch from the bark will protect against weeds, but can acidify the soil.
In addition, it is easy to bring weeds into a vegetable garden or flower garden together with mulch… This can happen if you use humus, peat or immature compost. So please note that you should never put weed flowers in compost.
How do I check the compost for weed seeds? In spring, pour the compost heap (or humus) with water and cover it with a film. If there are sprouts on it after a couple of days, it is clogged. You cannot use this compost as mulch – you must let it ripen. EM medicines can help with this.
You can use black geotextiles as mulch from inorganic materials. It is most often used for planting strawberries (garden strawberries). But it can also be used for mulching other cultures that like to grow in warmth.
The black film not only suppresses the growth of weeds, but also warms the soil.
Use of herbicides
If you can’t manage the weeds on your own, you will have to resort to chemicals that can destroy aggressive weeds. Many of these drugs are broad-spectrum herbicides – aimed at destroying many kinds of weeds. One of the proven drugs is Rounddap.
When you use any of the herbicides in your area, remember that this is a chemical that needs to be handled with great care. Observe the precautions and follow the instructions on the packaging.
If you do not want to use chemicals, you can try to get rid of weeds with bacteriological preparations. Cut the weeds with a sharp hoe and then water the area with an EM solution. For this purpose, for example, Baikal EM-1 will be suitable. The product should be diluted in water in proportion of 1:100. As a result the root system of weeds remaining in soil will be quickly processed.
Such treatment of the site is best done in autumn time, when the seedbeds are free from the main plants.
Mixed cultivation on one bed (flowerbed) of vegetables, berries and herbs will help to significantly reduce the number of weeds. This is to ensure that secondary plants act as mulches, leaving no room for weed growth.
This type of planting is ideal for flower beds where spring bulbs or annuals can be planted around insufficiently grown perennials.
Mixed landings are very unusual, but practical.
Ceding siderates or sowing vegetables again.
Weeds appear first on empty ground, so it is important to ensure that the beds are always occupied by plantings. Mulch helps to close the gaps in the garden. But its use is not always justified, especially if you have several free seedbeds after harvesting early greenery or onions.
In this case, you should think about sowing siderates or fast-growing vegetables. Do not leave the seedbeds empty.
